Chaos Scenario
The highlight of classes last week was Garfield's 'Chaos Scenario' and our discussion of the program. Garfield brought about some challenging views of the media in the future. This set off a great debate. It was fun and interesting to know what everyone had to say about the future of the media. I am really glad that there is no one answer to the question of the future.
Whether Garfield talks about television, the newspaper industry or simply advertising.. Each of them have different futures and at the end are still interrelated. It is apparent, if the news attracts attention then everything works. Consumers are usually what controls the media. The media gives the consumer what they want. Once they stop doing so, the consumer stops accessing the different modems and hence, the fall in the use of the different kinds of media.
I agree that there are some places in the world where the use of a certain kind of media is declining. If one looks at this from a broader perspective, the developing countries are far behind from this experience. There is still a high demand in every form of media. This is certainly because the population strength, the poverty and high illiteracy rate. Therefore, book-stores, movie-stores, newspapers and television are still really alive in most parts of the World. This question of decline has never ever been heard in the other parts of the world. Believe it or not, some people are still trying to figure out the internet and its uses.
I would have wanted Garfield to talk a little more on controlling the change. Reading Garfield's book gave me a lot of insight into the new world of media. However, his writing style did not necessary appeal to me. I figured that the topic of discussion was far more serious than he made it sound like which slightly irritated me. It could have been a whole lot convincing if had just used a different tone.

New York Times
What better way to end the semester than to know if and how we are losing the news. While reading the 'Business Day' on Monday I came across an article that spoke about the decline of television viewers. The top shows that usually attract young adults, for example, American Idol, Glee and other shows have shown a great decline in viewers in the past couple of weeks. Not only is this upsetting to the 'networks', it is also equally upsetting for the advertisers.
The article goes on to talk about the amount of time one can really spend in front of a TV. How many of us can really catch the live shows? If we don't, we just wait to stream it instead of waiting for a repeat on television. This spring, due to daylight savings time, there has been a slight decrease in viewers. Every year around the same time one notices this decreasing trend. But is the decreasing number increasing?
The internet offers us a great variety of things to do. Instead of making time out of your packed day, one can just use the internet to do the same thing.
It really depends on the people and not the technology. It depends on how comfortable one is with technology how easily accessible one is, if one has sentimental attachment, if one can afford it and tif one has any time for it.
It is apparent that we're not only losing the news, we are losing the television as a commodity.

Reflections
They usually say Jack of all trades are masters of none. Being a Media Fellow the saying is completely void. Jack of all trades tend to win. This week we skyped two people. One from the Ellen show and the other Larry's nephew on the laws and ethics of media. Jill Irwin form the Ellen show was truly an inspiration. She really showed us how to love what we do. Our guests showed us the multiple opportunities that one gets in the media line. Their good and bad experiences gave us a little idea about the do's and don'ts.
With talking to new people every week, I am getting much more comfortable in my environment while working on this project. There is more motivation now and I hope to be as proud of my work as they are.
